A junkyard in Michigan is the subject of a lawsuit that claims both raw sewage and automotive fluids were being illegally disposed of by the company. Ypsilanti Township filed the lawsuit against the business, and the junkyard was also told that it had to close as the process moved forward.
There are a number of claims being made against the business. First, it has been said that the automotive fluids were simply being dumped out into the ground, along with some chemicals. On top of that, the township says that the company was collecting the rainwater to use since the water from the city had been turned off. Finally, they say that raw sewage was also being dumped, but they do not yet know where it was going.
According to those involved, though, the junkyard has been responsive. Once the lawsuit was in place, they acted right away, cleaning up the mess. They also worked to reconnect some systems, such as the sewage lines, so that the sewage would be disposed of properly again.
The issues have been going on for a few years, as reports indicate that the company had sewage lines that were hooked up to a home around three years ago. That home has now been demolished, which is why the final destination of the sewage has not been determined at this time.
When dealing with this type of business litigation that pits a business against the local government, the business owners must know what their rights are. This is especially important if they have been taking the proper steps to get things back up to code once more.
