A Michigan rap group and the record label that releases its music is accused of repeatedly harassing and wrongfully firing its former publicist in a recent lawsuit. The 32-year-old woman alleges that Detroit-based band Insane Clown Posse regularly exposed her to emotional distress and sexually harassed her during her three years of employment with the band's label, Psychopathic Records.
The 17-page harassment lawsuit asserts that the plaintiff's co-workers and superiors routinely made sexual advances and requested that she perform unethical work. The claim goes on the contend that the former publicist was terminated from her position with Michigan-based Psychopathic Records when she reported the harassment to superiors, accusing company executives of wrongful firing and retaliation. Her attorney said she hoped conditions would improve after reporting the alleged wrongdoing, but worsened instead. The ex-publicist also claimed she was subjected to severe harassment at a 2012 music festival organized by the label, at which she was allegedly forced to use bathrooms alongside unclothed festival-goers.
The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages, though the woman's attorney said that he would demand a "substantial" sum. "And when I say substantial, I mean substantial," he explained.
The record label's leadership summarily denied the accusations detailed in the lawsuit. A lawyer representing both the firm and Insane Clown Posse, the members of which are named as co-defendants in the harassment claim, stressed that the publicist was terminated due to increasingly poor job performance. He noted that he could not discuss the case further as it is still in litigation, but emphasized that Psychopathic Records is not at fault.
Michigan businesses and organizations accused of harassing or discriminating against employees can face harsh fines, severe regulatory penalties and expensive settlements if they are found to be at fault. The civil litigation system gives such entities the chance to defend themselves and disprove the allegations against them.
